The title of my message today is greatness 오늘 제 멧시지의 제목은 위대함입니다//Our text is Nehemiah chapter 2 verses 1 to 10본문은 느헤미야2장1절에서 10절까지입니다/A few days ago as I was walking down a street,며칠전 제가 한 거리를 걸어가면서// somebody handed me a local newspaper called Great local Paper위대한 지역신문이라는 제목의 한 지역신문을 누군가 저에게 건네주엇읍니다
I was a bit shocked to learn that people even use the word great for the name of newspaper사람들이 심지어 신문의 이름으로 위대한 이라는 단어를 쓰는 것을 알게되어 약간 충격을 받았읍니다//Well, it was a newspaper published by a church called Global Church in Yangcheon-gu Seoul/ 그것은 서울 양천구에 있는 지구촌교회라고 불리우는 교회에 의하여 발행되는 한 신문이었읍니다/
The paper has about 20 pages carrying local, cultural and Christian news and the pastor’s sermons and comments.그 신문은 지역과 문화 뉴스 그리고 기독교뉴스 및 목사님의 설교와 강평등이 실린 약20페이지입니다
What do you think greatness is?위대함이 무엇이라고 생각하십니까?//According to a Korean language dictionary,한 한국어사전에 의하면// greatness is defined to be being outstanding or excellent in generosity, ability or performance.위대함이란 도량과 능력과 업적에 있어서 뛰어나거나 훌륭함이라고 정의 됩니다//
As you are well aware,잘 아시다싶이// the word greatness is not used for animals
위대함이란 단어는 동물들에게 사용되지않습니다//It is used only for beings such as God or human beings그것은 하나님이나 인간들 같은 존재들에게 사용됩니다
Saints glady call God great 성도들은 하나님을 위대하다고 즐겁게 말합니다//God is so great in love, wisdom and power that all creatures depend on him for existence하나님은 사랑과 지혜와 능력에 있어서 그토록 위대하셔서 모든 피조물이 존재하기위해 그분을 의지합니다//
Among men there have been great scholars, great scientists, great politicians, great musicians, great teachers and the like사람들가운데 위대한 학자들, 위대한 과학자들, 위대한 정치가들, 위대한 음악가들, 위대한 선생들 등이 있어왔읍니다
In today’s text we find Nehemiah refusing to live just as an ordinary run-of-the mill type of man/오늘 본문에서 우리는 느헤미야가 그저 평범한 스타일의 사람으로 살기를 거부하는 것을 발견합니다/ He was one of the exiles who were taken away out of Judah 그는 유다로부터 끌려온 포로중의 하나였읍니다//
He was serving the most powerful king of the world in those days as a cupbearer당시 세계에서 가장 막강한 왕의 술잔맡은 자로서 섬기고있었습니다
Please think of how hard he worked to become a close friend of the king in the greatest empire of the world.세게 최대제국의 왕의 가까운 친구가 되기위해 그가 얼마나 열심히 일했는가를 생각해보세요//He must have been very clean morally and excellent in skill그는 도덕적으로 깨끗하고 기능에 있어서도 뛰어났음에 틀림없읍니다//
He could have lived a very comfortable life while serving the king그는 그 왕을 섬기며 아주 안락한 삶을 살수도 있었을 것입니다//Materially he was not lacking anything물질적으로는 그는 부족함이 없었읍니다//But that didn’t satisfy him because he wanted to live not for himself but for God and others그러나 그는 자신이 아니라 하나님과 남들을 위해 살기를 원했으므로 그것이 그를 만족시키지 못했읍니다
By then he heard about a terrible condition of Jerusalem where his fathers were buried그럴즈음 그는 그의 조상들이 묻힌 예루살렘의 끔찍한 상황에 대해 들었읍니다//Right away he sensed the call of God telling him to go to Jerusalem곧바로 그는 그를 예루살렘으로 가라고 말씀하시는 하나님의 부름을 감지했읍니다//
Since he was trusted by the king fully, 그가 왕의 신임을 온전히 받고 있었으므로//he could easily persuade the king to help him go to Jerusalem for rebuilding it그는 예루살렘의 재건을 위해 그가 거기에 가도록 왕이 도와주도록 쉽게 설득할수있었읍니다
When the king asked him questions,왕이 그에게 질문할 때// he was spiritual enough to pray to God for right answer그는 올바른 대답을 위해 하나님께 기도할 만큼 영적이었읍니다//Nehemiah was a man of prayer who was filled with the spirit of prayer while serving the king느헤미야는 왕을 섬기면서 기도의 영으로 충만한 기도의 사람이었읍니다/
Oh we need the spirituality of Nehemiah who was not satisfied with material blessing물질적 축복으로 만족하지못한 느헤미야의 영성이 우리에게 필요합니다
He wanted closer fellowship with God not matter how shabby the place was where God was leading him그는 하나님이 그를 인도하는 곳이 아무리 보잘 것 없어도 그분과 더 친밀한 교제를 원했읍니다//As a deer thirsts for streams, so he longed for God amid material abundance사슴이 시냇물을 갈급하듯이 그는 물질적 풍요속에서도 하나님을 사모했읍니다 /
In those days the wall of Jeruslaem was broken down by enemies.당시 예루살렘의 성벽은 원수들에 의해 무너졌던 것입니다//The city was shabby and terrible도시가 초라하고 형편없었읍니다//But Nehemiah felt that God was calling him there그러나 느헤미야는 하나님이 그를 그곳으로 부르고 계심을 느꼈읍니다
Are you willing to give up your present comfort to go to the field God is calling you to, God willing?여러분은 하나님의 뜻이라면 그분이 부르시는 곳으로 가기위하여 현재의 안락을 기꺼히 포기하겠읍니까?//When you say yes to that question and put it into action그 질문에 예라고 답변하고 실행에 옮길 때//
angels in heaven will dance and you belong to the ranks of the great 하늘에서 천사들이 춤을 출것이고 여러분은 위대한 자들의 대열에 들어갑니다//We learn from Nehemiah that the great are sensitive to the call of God and filled with the spirit of prayer.위대한 자들은 하나님의 부르심에 민감하고 기도의 영으로 충만함을 느헤미야로부터 우리는 배웁니다
I want us to imitate him 나는 우리가 그를 닮기를 원합니다//Now let’s observe the lives of those other great people who have exerted great influence on human beings.이제 인간들에게 큰 영향을 끼친 다른 위대한 자들의 삶을 살피겟습니다//
Who can you think of as great presidents of America?미국의 위대한 대통령들로 누구를 생각하실수있읍니까?//I think that most of us agree that Lincoln is the greatest American president.링컨이 가장 위대한 대통령이라고 우리 대부분이 합의한다고 저는 생각합니다//
Why do Americans call him great?왜 미국인들이 그를 위대하다고 합니까?//Is it because he succeeded in making lots of money?그가 돈을 많이 모으는데 성공해서입니가?
Is it because he possessed an excellent skill? No.그가 훌륭한 기술을 가졌기 때문입니까? 아닙니다//Because he believed that it was right for him to set black slaves free according to the will of God하나님의 뜻에 따라 흑인노예들을 해방시키는 것이 옳다는 것을 그는 믿었기 때문입니다
In those days white people in the South strongly opposed Lincoln's belief that slaves be set free그 시절에 남부의 백인들은 노예들이 자유롭게 되어야 한다는 링컨의 믿음을 강하게 반대했읍니다//So, there broke out a civil war between the North of Lincoln and the South of those who wanted to keep having black slaves 그래서 링컨의 북부와 흑인노예들을 계속 소유하기를 원한 자들의 남부간에 내전이 일어났읍니다//Lots of soldiers were killed during the war그 전쟁중 많은 군인들이 죽임을 당했읍니다
Who can you think of as great pastors?/위대한 목사님으로 누구를 생각할수있읍니까?/I think pastor Sohn Yangwon is one of the greatest pastors in Korea 손양원 목사님이 한국에서 가장 위대한 목사님중의 한분으로 저는 생각합니다/Why was he great?왜 그가 위대햇읍니까?//
Because he loved his enemy as himself who was a communist and killed his real sons공산주의자였고 자신의 친 아들들을 죽인 그의 원수를 자신의 몸처럼 사랑했기 때문입니다//Who can you think of as great orators?위대한 연설가로 누구를 생각할수있읍니까?
I think one of the greatest orators of this age is Martin Luther King who delivered the famous speech called I have a dream.제 생각에 이 시대 가장 위대한 연설가중에 하나는 ”내게 꿈이 있읍니다”라는 유명한 연설을 한 마틴루터킹이라고 봅니다//Why was he great?왜 그가 위대했읍니까?//
Because not only did he speak very eloquently but also the contents of the speech was about freedom which is a very important value in human culture왜나면 그가 아주 웅변적으로 말했을 뿐만 아니라 그 연설의 내용이 인간의 문화에서 매우 중요한 가치인 자유에 대한 것이었기 때문입니다
He was assassinated due to the freedom of black people he strongly insisted on그는 그가 강력히 주장한 흑인들의 자유로 인해 암살당햇읍니다// Now, I want to think about the meaning of greatness deeply in connection with Christianity이제 기독교와 관련하여 위대함의 의미에 대해 깊이 생각하고 싶습니다//
Who is a great man of God regarding faith in God?하나님을 향한 믿음에 있어서 위대한 하나님의 사람은 누구입니까?//Every believer knows that Abraham is the father of faith아브라함이 믿음의 아버지임을 모든 신자는 압니다//Why is Abraham famous for his faith?왜 아브라함이 그의 믿음으로 유명합니까?
Because he believed in God so sincerely that he even was willing to offer his only son Issac to God as burnt-offering.왜냐면 그는 하나님을 그토록 진실하게 믿어 그의 독자 이삭까지도 하나님께 번제로 기꺼히 드리려고 했기때문입니다//
Actually he could no way understand how come God asked him to offer Issac as burnt-offering사실 그는 하나님이 어찌하여 이삭을 번제로 드리라고 요청하시는 지 이해할 길이 없었읍니다
But he just trusted God and proceeded to offer his only son as burnt-offering to God그는 그냥 하나님을 신뢰했고 그의 독자를 번제로 하나님께 드리기로 했읍니다//
We can picture how much Abraham agonized over this matter of giving up his only son.아브라함이 그의 독자를 포기해야만 하는 이 문제로 얼마나 고민했을 찌 우리는 그려볼수있읍니다
Probably he couldn’t sleep a wink the night before he ventured out to go to the mountain of burnt-offering with his only son Isaac아마 그는 그의 독자 이삭과 더불어 번제의 산으로 감히 가기 전날 밤 한 잠도 자지못했을 것입니다//
Now let’s look at the characters of the New Testament이제 신약의 인물을 봅시다//Personally I believe that the two greatest servants of God except Jesus are John the Baptist and apostle Paul 예수님을 제외하고 가장 위대한 하나님의 두 종은 세례 요한과 사도바울이라고 저는 개인적으로 믿습니다
John the Baptist was a forerunner of the gospel who was born six months earlier than Jesus 세례요한은 예수님보다 6개월 먼저 탄생하신 복음의 선도주자였읍니다//His mission was to prepare the mind of people by telling them to repent of their sins and be baptized so that they might smoothly come to Jesus for salvation그의 사명은 사람들이 매끄럽게 예수님께 나아와 구원얻도록 그들에게 죄를 회개하고 세례받으리고 하므로서 그들의 마음을 준비시키는 것이었읍니다
Humanly speaking, 인간적으로 말해서//something humilating happened to him창피스런 일이 그에게 일어났읍니다//His disciples were going to Jesus saying goodby to him그의 제자들이 그에 굿바이하며 예수님께로 가고있었읍니다//At this, John said. “Christ must increase, I msut decrease.”이에 대해 요한은 “그리스도는 흥왕해야하고 나는 쇠하여야한 다”라고 말했읍니다
He was happy to lose his disiples to Jesus그는 그의 제자들을 예수님께 보내주는 것이 기뻤읍니다//He publicly decalred that Jesus was greater than he에수님이 자기보다 더 위대하다고 그는 공적으로 선언했읍니다// John was happy to see people going to Jesus사람들이 예수님께 가는 것을 보는 것이 요한은 행복했읍니다//He lived a short but very great life그는 짧지만 매우 위대한 삶을 살았읍니다//
He was not afraid of conftronting evil in his days그의 시절에 그는 악에 대해 정면으로 도전하는 것을 두려워하지않았읍니다//He openly pointed out the sin King Herod committed그는 헤롯왕이 저지른 죄를 공공연히 지적했읍니다
Herod killed him while he was in prison.헤롯은 그가 수감되어있는 동안 그를 죽였읍니다//But he didn’t complain to God that God let Herod kill him 그러나 요한은 하나님이 헤롯으로 하여금 그를 죽이도록 내버려둿다고 불평하지않았읍니다//He was glad to go to God 그는 하나님께 가기를 즐거워했읍니다//
He was ready to go to God who created him자기를 지으신 하나님께 갈 준비가 되었던 것입니다//How about apostle Paul?사도바울은 어떠합니까?// He said that he would be willing to sacrifice his life for the gospel//그는 복음을 위해서라면 목숨도 기꺼히 내놓겠다고 했습니다.
He showed the supreme level of greatness/위대함의 극치를 보여주었읍니다 /So far we have observed the people including Nehemiah who refused to live an ordinary life and instead a great life for the sake of God and human race우리가 지금까지 느헤미야를 포함하여 하나님과 인류를 위해 평범히 살기를 거부하고 위대한 삶을 살은 분들을 살폈습니다//These have altogether devoted their life to something greater than themselves이 들은 한결같이 자신들보다 더 위대한 그 무엇인가를 위해 목숨을 바쳤습니다
Of course, the greatest of these is our Lord Jesus who sacrificed himself with love for the salvation of all people물론 가장 위대하신 분은 전 인류의 구원을 위해 사랑으로 자신을 희생하신 우리 주 예수님이십니다. //I pray that all of us refuse to live an ordinary life and instead a great life by following Jesus where we are우리 모두 평범히 살기를 거부하고 대신에 예수님을 따름으로서 자신이 있는 자리에서 위대한 삶을 다 살기를 빕니다
/In conclusion, greatness is to deny oneself each moment and take up the cross of Jesus and follow him결론적으로 위대함이란 자신을 부인하고 순간 순간 예수님의 십자가를 지고 그분을 따르는 것입니다//That is, thinking each mement what Jesus would do, we accept his thought decisively without compromising 즉 순간 순간 예수님이라면 어떻게 하셨을 까를 생각하며 타협없이 과감히 그분의 생각을 받아드리는 것입니다
That may never be easy결코 그것은 쉽지않을 것입니다//Sometimes it may mean the pain of chiseling our bones가끔 뼈를 깍는 아픔을 의미하기도 합니다//
It is to conclude,” the way to live is only this” while being led by the Holy Spirit오직 성령의 인도를 받으며 결국 살길은 그길밖에 없다고 결론내리는 것입니다//
That is greatness saints can experience in their daily lives 그것이 바로 성도들이 그들의 매일의 삶가운데 경험할 수 있는 위대함입니다
Today's Text taken from Nehemiah chapter 2 verses 1 to 10 (느헤미야2:1-10)
1.In the month of Nisan in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, when wine was brought for him, I took the wine and gave it to the king. I had not been sad in his presence before; 1 아닥사스다 왕 제이십년 니산월에 왕 앞에 포도주가 있기로 내가 그 포도주를 왕에게 드렸는데 이전에는 내가 왕 앞에서 수심이 없었더니
2.so the king asked me, Why does your face look so sad when you are not ill? This can be nothing but sadness of heart. I was very much afraid, 2 왕이 내게 이르시되 네가 병이 없거늘 어찌하여 얼굴에 수심이 있느냐 이는 필연 네 마음에 근심이 있음이로다 하더라 그 때에 내가 크게 두려워하여
3.but I said to the king, May the king live forever! Why should my face not look sad when the city where my fathers are buried lies in ruins, and its gates have been destroyed by fire? 3 왕께 대답하되 왕은 만세수를 하옵소서 내 조상들의 묘실이 있는 성읍이 이제까지 황폐하고 성문이 불탔사오니 내가 어찌 얼굴에 수심이 없사오리이까 하니
4.The king said to me, What is it you want? Then I prayed to the God of heaven,왕이 내게 이르시되 그러면 네가 무엇을 원하느냐 하시기로 내가 곧 하늘의 하나님께 묵도하고
5.and I answered the king, If it pleases the king and if your servant has found favor in his sight, let him send me to the city in Judah where my fathers are buried so that I can rebuild it. 5 왕에게 아뢰되 왕이 만일 좋게 여기시고 종이 왕의 목전에서 은혜를 얻었사오면 나를 유다 땅 나의 조상들의 묘실이 있는 성읍에 보내어 그 성을 건축하게 하옵소서 하였는데
6.Then the king, with the queen sitting beside him, asked me, How long will your journey take, and when will you get back? It pleased the king to send me; so I set a time. 6 그 때에 왕후도 왕 곁에 앉아 있었더라 왕이 내게 이르시되 네가 몇 날에 다녀올 길이며 어느 때에 돌아오겠느냐 하고 왕이 나를 보내기를 좋게 여기시기로 내가 기한을 정하고
7.I also said to him, If it pleases the king, may I have letters to the governors of Trans-Euphrates, so that they will provide me safe-conduct until I arrive in Judah? 7 내가 또 왕에게 아뢰되 왕이 만일 좋게 여기시거든 강 서쪽 총독들에게 내리시는 조서를 내게 주사 그들이 나를 용납하여 유다에 들어가기까지 통과하게 하시고
8.And may I have a letter to Asaph, keeper of the king's forest, so he will give me timber to make beams for the gates of the citadel by the temple and for the city wall and for the residence I will occupy? And because the gracious hand of my God was upon me, the king granted my requests. 8 또 왕의 삼림 감독 아삽에게 조서를 내리사 그가 성전에 속한 영문의 문과 성곽과 내가 들어갈 집을 위하여 들보로 쓸 재목을 내게 주게 하옵소서 하매 내 하나님의 선한 손이 나를 도우시므로 왕이 허락하고
9.So I went to the governors of Trans-Euphrates and gave them the king's letters. The king had also sent army officers and cavalry with me. 9 군대 장관과 마병을 보내어 나와 함께 하게 하시기로 내가 강 서쪽에 있는 총독들에게 이르러 왕의 조서를 전하였더니
10.When Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the Ammonite official heard about this, they were very much disturbed that someone had come to promote the welfare of the Israelites. 10 호론 사람 산발랏과 종이었던 암몬 사람 도비야가 이스라엘 자손을 흥왕하게 하려는 사람이 왔다 함을 듣고 심히 근심하더라
